Is Brexit good news or bad news for UK Haulage Industry?

As “Brexit means Brexit” rings in the ears UK haulage companies are getting ready for the UK to leave the EU now rather than later.

Article 50 hasn’t yet been filed, which will start the two-year countdown, but now the Conservative party have a new leader in place it is understood that negotiations are likely to begin sooner rather than later.

The Freight Transport Association recently carried out research that revealed, apart from having direct access to European markets, that haulage companies are facing issues that aren’t so different from those issues that have been a problem over the last few years.

The UK has a skills shortage within the industry and this is no secret, with an ageing workforce that will no doubt see a large number of retirees in the not so distant future hiring foreign drivers is something UK haulage companies see as essential.

Freight Transport Association’s EU affairs manager Chris Yarsley, recently stated: “With the UK’s current driver shortage, it’s no surprise that labour mobility issues are at the forefront of international transport businesses’ minds, and this is certainly something the FTA will be pressing the government to prioritise when the negotiations begin.”

Good news within the industry though as general haulage levels could possibly increase across the UK due to the Brexit process, as industries such as steelmaking are set to receive a boost in domestic sales as the use of foreign imports could be slashed.

The steelmaking industry’s representative body UK Steel sees a bright future for the sector if a number of recommendations are put in place.

UK Steel is urging businesses and the government to use domestic UK steel when sourcing materials for projects – which could in turn see a rise in UK haulage services used to deliver these materials to construction sites and infrastructure projects from suppliers across the country.
